Literature: The study of written or spoken material, but the term most often refers to creative works. Literature includes poetry, drama, fiction, and many kinds of nonfiction writing, as well as oral, dramatic, and broadcast compositions not necessarily preserved in a written format, such as films and television programs.

British Literature: The study of literature that provides a survey of representative genres from the Anglo-Saxon period to the modern day. Emphasis is given to the historical and philosophical milieus of major authors and their works. Composition focuses on critical analysis of literature covered in class as well as outside parallel readings.

Eleventh Grade English: The study of American literature from the colonial period to the present. Students read and analyze selected works from various literary genres; write about what they read using the writing process; review grammar, mechanics, and usage as a means of improving written communication skills; and expand their vocabulary.

Ninth Grade English: Emphasizes development of basic English skills: grammar, composition, reading, and vocabulary. Literature study focuses on the genres of fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Students are encouraged to approach literature as a source of enjoyment as well as an art form.
